Scientific and Technological Cooperation with the Republic of Indonesia

At present, Belarus and Indonesia actively establish contacts and ties in the area of science and technology. The Belarusian-Indonesian Working Group on cooperation in science, technology and higher education is functioning. The Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia on Scientific and Technological Cooperation, the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus and the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia on cooperation in the Field of Higher Education were signed and entered into force.

March 11 – 14, 2012 during his visit to Indonesia a group headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Mr. Sergei Aleinik held meetings with the Minister of Research and Technology Mr. Gusti Muhammad Hatta, the Chairman of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences Lukman Hakim and the Rector of the Bandung Institute of Technology Dr. Akhmaloka to demonstrate the scientific, technical and innovative potential of Belarus.

As a result the main promising areas of cooperation in science and technology were identified, Indonesian experts were invited to visit the Republic of Belarus.

To follow up at the end of March, 2012 as part of the National Exposition of the Republic of Belarus at the Indonesian International Exhibition “Heavy Duty Vehicle and Equipment” the representatives of the institutes of Belarus National Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Education, the State Committee on Science and Technology held meetings with the representatives of the Ministry of Research and Technology of Indonesia and the centers of metallurgy, physics, chemistry, biotechnology, biology and botany of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences. Visits to research laboratories were arranged as well as substantive discussions of areas for cooperation were held. An agreement was reached to exchange the lists of research projects to determine the specific topics for joint development.

Protocols of intent on cooperation in the field of metallurgy were signed between the Indonesian Institute of Metallurgy and the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the Yanka Kupala Grodno State University, the Belarus National Technological University “Scientific and Technological Park “Polytechnic”, the Belarusian-Russian University.

May 17–19, 2012 the Rector of Bandung Institute of Technology Dr. Akhmaloka visited Belarus. During the visit meetings and negotiations at  the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Belarusian National Technical University, Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radio Electronics were arranged. A Memorandum of Understanding on International Cooperation between the Belarusian National Technical University and the Bandung Institute of Technology was signed.

December 3–4, 2012 visit to the Republic of Belarus of the Chairman of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences Dr. Lukman Hakim was arranged.

March 19, 2013 during the state visit of the President of Belarus A.Lukashenko to Indonesia an Agreement between the governments of the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Indonesia on cooperation in the sphere of science and technology was signed (came into force on January 29, 2015), as well as a Memorandum of Understanding between the Belarus National Technical University and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (signed and came into force on March 19, 2013).

March 23–28, 2014 а delegation of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus led by Prof. Dr. Alexandre Ph. Ilyushenko, Director General of the State Scientific Institution “Powder Metallurgy Institute”, visited Indonesia.

July 15–16, 2014 delegation of the V.F. Kuprevich Institute of Experimental Botany of the Belarus National Academy of Sciences headed by Dr. Aliaksandr V. Puhacheuski, Director of the Institute, visited Bogor (Indonesia). 

On December 14–16, 2015 the Belarusian delegation headed by Dr. Petr Baltrukovich, Deputy Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology of Belarus visited Indonesia to take part in the 1st Meeting of Joint Belarusian-Indonesian Working Group on Science, Technology and Higher Education Cooperation. Indonesian part of the Working Group was headed by Prof. Ainun Na’im, the Secretary General for the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of Indonesia.

During the Meeting the Parties defined the perspective areas of cooperation, agreed the Executive Program of Scientific-Technical and Innovation Cooperation for 2016–2017, discussed the issue of establishing the bilateral legal framework in the sphere of higher education. The agreements reached during the Meeting were recorded in the Protocol signed by the Parties on December 16, 2015.

On June 1–3, 2016 a delegation headed by the Chairman of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences Prof. Iskandar Zulkarnain visited Belarus. The delegation visited The Central Botanical Garden of NAS of Belarus, The Powder Metallurgy Institute of NAS of Belarus, Belarus State University, Belarus Hi-Tech Park. A seminar on Belarus-Indonesia science and technology cooperation was held. Priority areas of bilateral cooperation were identified during the meeting with V.Gusakov, Chairman of NAS of Belarus.

On November 13-15, 2018 a delegation headed by the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education of Indonesia M. Nasir and with the participation of the Chairman of the Indonesian Institute of Science Laksana Tri Handoko visited the Republic of Belarus. During the visit, the second meeting of the Belarusian-Indonesian Working Group on cooperation in science, technology and higher education was held, a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus and the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia on cooperation in the Field of Higher Education was signed.

In 2020, the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus together with the Ministry of Research and Technology/National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia announced a contest for joint Belarusian-Indonesian scientific and technical projects.
 
 
In 2021, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology and the National Agency for Research and Innovation of the Republic of Indonesia was maintaining contacts with the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus to intensify bilateral cooperation and study the launch of joint Belarusian-Indonesian scientific and technical projects.
